Foreign Affairs Council adopted comprehensive Conclusions on Water Diplomacy

BRUSSELS - The  Foreign Affairs Council of the Council of the European Union adopted comprehensive Conclusions on Water Diplomacy. The Conclusions are designed to enhance EU diplomatic engagement to maximise the potential of water as a tool for peace and stability. They reaffirm the EU’s commitment to the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation and to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda (SDG 6, “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”).

The Conclusions confirm the EU's continued commitment to address water challenges around the world with a strong emphasis on multilateralism and transboundary water cooperation. They build on the recent EU demarche in support of the UN Water Convention, carried out by many EU Delegations this year. They also welcome recent discussions at the UN Security Council linking water, climate, peace and security. The EU confirms its continued commitment to give the necessary consideration to the importance of water and sanitation in the programming of future financial and technical cooperation with partner countries.
